In Bed with Chilly Gonzales

The composer and showman in slippers and bathrobe pursues his craft with the deepest devotion: he is an entertainer. That his modest contribution to this calling would one day result in the following announcement was virtually inevitable: Chilly Gonzales has made a Christmas album.

With his undisguised fidelity to melody, Gonzales deftly maneuvers his way through the mythical, all-encompassing songbook of Christmas; in his choice of tunes, he opts for nuance over pomp. From We Three Kings to Wham, the great revelation of this album lies in the restrained, pure beauty of its interpretation in Gonzales' signature minor keys.

Alice Phoebe Lou

When we’re used to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, having all that noise taken away can leave a silence that’s just as loud. For South African-born, Berlin-based artist Alice Phoebe Lou, it was an opportunity to articulate her deepest thoughts and emotions into a new album, Glow.

After having to reschedule the recording a few times Alice found an analogue studio in Dresden where she was able to work on Glow with producer Dave Parry, her bassist Daklis, and her longtime collaborator Ziv Yamin on drums and keys. Parry also provided those blissful guitar lines that Lou says the songs were “begging for”. “I couldn’t have asked for more inspiring people to create the record with,” she says. She’d fallen in love with recording to tape by this point, and to bolster this warm yet gritty sound, Parry sourced decades-old mics and gear for the studio.

Disarstar ©Tim Erdmann
Disarstar

Disarstar reads the riot act to parts of German rap with classic diss tracks, which, however, live from content criticism and not from personal resentment. The political awareness behind such lines has always distinguished Disarstar. But rarely has he brought it to the point like on Deutscher Oktober.

It's not about the big theses, the political guardrails or theoretical constructs. Instead, he reports in the style of a reporter from microcosms with which he is well acquainted. With Deutscher Oktober, Disarstar brings his astute political rap to the point in such a clear-sighted and precise way.

ELIF ©Till van Loosen
ELIF

"A lot has happened," ELIF answers when asked about the time since her second album Doppelleben. She parted ways with her label and management, and on top of that, ended the toxic relationship she was in at the time. "The guy put me down and took away my self-esteem until there was nothing left of me," ELIF looks back. "When all you hear all the time is that you can't do anything and you're not worth anything, eventually you believe that."

It's a realization that, for ELIF, also puts her past discography in a different light. "I love my old albums, but I realized that I was always totally controlled in music. By finally finding myself and developing so much self-love, I've become much freer. I know who I am and appreciate myself - so much so that I don't care what anyone else says."

Also in terms of what ELIF actually sounds like. "I didn't even have the plan to sound different, I just started listening to different music. Just because I was once labeled a pop musician doesn't mean I have to make pop music my whole life. I'm not a service provider, I'm an artist. An artist who wants to grow."

Alli Neumann meets Helene Shani Braun. Helene, 23, lives in Berlin and is one of the first female and queer people in Germany to train as a Jewish rabbi at the Abraham Geiger Kolleg (Potsdam). With this, [Helene] "writes history" (SPIEGEL) and inspires many young (Jewish) people with her progressive appearance on social media.

Ping-Pong mit Bosse

Bianca Hauda meets Axel Bosse for the Federal Youth Games in table tennis!

In the process, the two also train their motor skills: does the brain-hand coordination work? At the same time battling band names and watching the ball, or dropping favorite festivals during the exchange of blows, which they unfortunately had to miss in the last months. And what is Aki actually doing in Lockdown right now? Can we expect a new album this year? Is table tennis more meditative or annoying? Questions over questions, and who will win?

Die Höchste Eisenbahn

The concert is presented by Deutschlandfunk Nova.

The band Die Höchste Eisenbahn started more as a project. First consisting of the singer-songwriter Francesco Wilking, who writes short stories as well as musical poetry, and Moritz Krämer, the two musicians Max Schröder and Felix Weigt joined the project in 2012. Three albums later, you can already say that it is no longer a project, but a German pop band that is unparalleled in the German-language music landscape. The way they tell stories through their music, creating a very personal connection, is special. Their lyrics are often about longing, loss and world-weariness. But at the same time, they are always searching for their own self. Last year Die höchste Eisenbahn recorded a three-song EP with three live versions of the songs Louise, Zieh mich an and Überall.

Mine und die Welt der TinyTrees

TinyTrees is a somewhat unorthodox plant store in Berlin Friedrichshain. Philipp and Thordes create tiny plant creations and fancy terrariums there. Their specialty is succulents and bonsais, which they don't always want to part with. But what the team lacks in capitalistic wit, they make up for with their infectious love of plants.

Mine gets to choose her own tree-and-bowl combination and playful figurines in the store, which she transforms into a handsome bonsai under Philipp's expert eye.

JEREMIAS

The concert of JEREMIAS is presented by 1Live.

If you mix a little bit of Parcels with a little bit of Tom Misch and Men I Trust as sources of inspiration, the result is disco funk that no one can stand still for. JEREMIAS, four guys from Hanover with an average age of 20 years, are probably no longer an insider tip. With their first EP Du musst an den Frühling glauben they played some festivals and support shows for Giant Rooks or Ok Kid in 2019. That the quartet is well received, you can tell already by the fact that their fans sold out 18 shows of their first own tour completely. Last year they released their second EP alma - the soul in Spanish. "It's an EP about love and sorrow. However theatrical it may seem, that inspired us significantly," says the band about their second record. And that's what JEREMIAS is all about: funky and groovy songs that you can't help but dance along to, alongside beautiful ballads that quite touch you.

Ebow
Ebow

Ebow's message remains provocative and political. Solo, but also as a member of the Gaddafi Gals, she raps against sexism, racism and homophobia, for an open, solidary and equal society. The artist, who now lives in Berlin, is currently working on her new album.

"QUEER AF II" is the successor of the EP "EBOW 400", which was created in the thought to make an EP with queer love songs for the community every summer. "QUEER AF II" is a diverse, short EP that deals with the topic of lovesong in very different ways: "Shorty" is a catchy dissonant uptempo number with a hook that mills itself into your ear canals, "Tunnel" is a deeper track with R'n'B leanings and a casual jazzy vibe. The EP is completed by "Friends", which was already released in summer and smoothly celebrates the friend zone.

As before, Ebow playfully combines old school, new school, battlerap and R'n'B. Ebow's lyrical palette is equally broad, ranging from diary to political pamphlet. For "QUEER AF II" the motto is "Love is the message".

Rola ©Finn Beek
Rola

Rola not only still has more air in her lungs than most of the local music scene, but has also learned the necessary lessons since she once knelt in front of the TV early in the morning to catch her first own video on Viva and record it with VHS tape. Her plan, then as now: to turn the German music scene upside down for once, to blow the ears free and open the mind, so that it is finally ready for real, uncompromising German R'n'B and Soul. And no one delivers that in such a refreshing, modern and real way as Rola.

With over 13 years of music career - meaning countless released songs, EPs and albums, tour supports for superstars like Rihanna and Cro, the first own solo tour and not to forget her own fashion label - Rola still comes to the realization with her single "Roli" this year: "Nobody knows me for real". 2020 is the end of it. A shrill guardian, an irrepressible fire-starter, a colorful knight of bass.

Lari Luke's strongest superpower, however, is and remains her ability to give people the feeling of boundless freedom for a moment. Shake them up completely for once and blow their minds.

The new year has just begun and Sugar MMFK gets right into it with his new single, in which he settles accounts with the unjust system. is the first single from the upcoming album "TRIBUT" . "TRIBUT" is the result of months of long self-reflection that the artist has gone through in the past year.

Rote Mütze Raphi
Rote Mütze Raphi

Raphi comes from a small town near Koblenz and turned 19 at the beginning of this year. Her father is German, her mother Brazilian.

Raphi loves rap and music with urban influences, she is not the classic "Barbie" who likes to brag, it is important to her to be real and authentic - in life and when she makes music. Since Raphi is 12 she uploads videos. At 14, she began to write her own lyrics and in 2019 finally started to publish them on the appropriate channels. With this, she gained many new fans and followers. Raphi says "a lot has changed for me since then". She is doing better than before and through music she has met many people who support her and stand behind her. First and foremost, Raphi processes her feelings in the songs - it's a kind of therapy for her.

MELE ©Lebefrauu
MELE

"MELE is pop music in an alternative and different way. Even I come back to myself," said actor Klaus Kinski. God forbid! He said the bad word. But Mozart was also pop music. Not that MELE claims to be like Mozart. Neither MELE, nor her band, look particularly good in red velvet three-quarter pants.

Because pop is not just pop. And MELE is a shrewd observer of her environment. The lyrics are a cool look through actually so friendly-trusting brown eyes at what happens to everyone: Wanting, not being able, resigning and then calling "now more than ever". Without pathos. But with a wink. "Music to kick through the table," Gandhi once said.

Marlene grew up in the Stuttgart area and moved to Osnabrück to study. There MELE is born as her alter ego and the first songs are written. Songs like "Monogamie" or "deine cousine" quickly make it clear: MELE does not
does not mince words.

Betterov

What is it like when home is no longer the place to stay? Or you no longer leave your own room because the pressure of the infinite possibilities of our time is too great? What happens when the compulsion for self-optimization only leads to isolation? - "Viertel vor Irgendwas" is the name of singer-songwriter Betterov's debut EP, on which he negotiates the big themes and questions of his generation in six extremely focused songs located between indie rock and post-punk. Betterov writes the songs for "Viertel vor Irgendwas" alone at home, and the 25-year-old's almost unabashed talent flashes in almost every line. For the recordings, musician friends come together in the studio to create a dense, uncompromising sound that sounds much more like a band than a singer-songwriter. The EP was recorded and produced by Tim Tautorat (Faber, AnnenMayKantereit and others).

Sarah Farina
Sarah Farina

Sarah Farina sprinkles positivity over the darkest bass. She’s innovative, she’s skilful, and she’s the smiling antithesis of genre cliques and sour scene elitists. What you hear is all you need to know. And what you’ll hear from Sarah Farina’s sets is seamlessly blended bass-heavy footwork and futuristic beats, with fearless forays through R&B and UK Funky. It’s inclusive, forward-thinking and unrestrained. It’s a genre-rejecting style that she’s named rainbowbass.

She is recognised and revered by the best of her bass music contemporaries, with connections to crews worldwide including Teklife, Hyperdub, Deep Medi, Buraka Som Sistema and Exit Records. Capable of holding her own in line-ups alongside artists as diverse as DJ Storm, Laurent Garnier, Om Unit, Kode9, François K and Lunice, her sets unite the dance-floor, equally impressive to industry insiders and those who just want to dance.

This supergroup from Vienna is really serious about one thing: having fun! MY UGLY CLEMENTINE create a more than contemporary dusting of guitar with vitamin-rich borrowings from the 90s indie/college rock era. A post-punk approach here, irresistible pop hooks there, strong, serious messages - and still a sing-along chorus and a smile on the lips.

The founding story alone contributes to the creation of the legend: On Valentine's Day (sic!) 2019, a mere picture of the newly assembled foursome on social media is enough to create an initial wave of excitement - because the personnel is well known: Sophie Lindinger (Leyya) as mastermind has fulfilled the long-cherished wish to work together with musicians* she holds in high esteem - and so Mira Lu Kovacs (5K HD, Schmieds Puls) stands next to her on guitar, for example. Kathrin Kolleritsch, who just made headlines with her queer-feminist rap solo project KEROSIN95, joins her on drums and vocals.

The "supergroup" was ready, which in the meantime, supplemented by Nastasja Ronck (Lucid Kid), plays the stages far beyond the country's borders. Until today there is no "front person" - the vocals are changed and distributed according to the all-star principle.

IUMA ©Frederike Wetzels
IUMA

IUMA seems outwardly as a young artist and woman mostly self-confident, but in many situations she makes herself much stronger than she really is. That's why she describes herself as "cool on the outside, a victim at heart". That being an adult in this world is not always easy and can quickly overwhelm you, knows IUMA too. Her lyrics, which she cleverly dresses in a contemporary garb of pop, trap and an avant-garde production, tell us about this. She shows us a self-chosen, contemporary image of women, which wavers between emancipation and conformity and manages to emancipate itself precisely because of this. It all adds up to a picture of forward-looking pop music: Innovation, content and emotion.

PAAR

Running by the name of PAAR, three German artists forged their public personae to one sonic canvas to paint their musical visions in sound. Soaked in layers of classic New Wave and post-punk of the eighties, swathed by modern electronic sounds and experimental punk, PAAR have created a musical body consisting of an intriguing mix of simple beats, minimalistic synths, refined with steady textures of guitar and bass, sanded with distinctive lyrics and vocals. If Blade Runner had been set in the dystopian Berlin rather than the City of Angels, PAAR would have been the soundtrack.

Mulay

Mulay is, in short, a Berlin-based alternative/R&B singer-songwriter, producer and artist. However, the emphasis is rarely so much on the artistic.

She started her first band projects as a music student for jazz and pop in the Netherlands. The experiences she had there sparked her multidisciplinary approach and the continued journey of discovery in her artistic self-realization.

In a world of fleeting moments, Mulay wants to make music that lasts. The source of her inspiration are artists* who have gone their own way, such as FKA Twigs, SZA and Sevdaliza. Sound textures, vivid imagery, intimate emotions and irrevocably infectious grooves from a wide musical spectrum cross-pollinate. Mulay shapes a kaleidoscopic downtempo sound that can be captured at the intersections of soulful R&B, trip-hop, emphatic pop and electronica.

Lie Ning is an artist from Berlin who gives this diffuse mixture of feelings a musical home. He comes from an environment that is just as constantly changing its face. With a voice of velvet surrounded by muffled piano hammers, shimmering electronic elements and the pulse of racing hearts, the 22-year-old creates a sometimes frightening, but mostly embracing intimacy.

Buoyed by somnambulistic confidence and relentless candor, the songs succeed in taking a deep look into the listener's soul while mirroring an artist's deepest inner self that couldn't be more thrilling.

Finn Ronsdorf

Berlin - a city celebrated for its hyper-liberated queer culture and sexual hedonism - is the backdrop of 21-year-old Finn Ronsdorf. Raised in a small village in the Black Forest of Germany, he discovered early on that there must be more than a dictated path through life and that it can be found only within oneself. Looking for more than the casual encounters that define so many in the city, Finn's songs question the concept of a love based on jealousy and possession. Why do we flee from loneliness? Why do we look for somebody to fill our emptiness? Why is there a constant need for achievement? Each song takes the listener on a journey - teetering between playful parody and heartbreaking anguish.

CV Vision
CV Vision

The genesis of many of these tracks began when CV Vision moved to Berlin 2014. His flat has a small chamber where he could fit a drum set, so he trated the walls with foam, and in true DIY style, dives headfirst into recording these tracks. It was the natural next step on an audio adventure that first began when CV Vision picked up the guitar in his teens, and a couple years later started recording with friends in his home town of Bayreuth. Fast forward ten years and here is his debut - a culmination of practising chops and learning instruments, mastering recording techniques and fine-tuning the CV Vision sound.

It's a sound that condenses elements of acid rock, psych soul, library funk and new wave oddities into a move soundtrack for your mind. It's a journey from 60s west coast LSD-drenched excursions to 80s synth and post-punk mutations. Tropical is a plunge into another time, another music you can simply swim around in and explore.

But today she prefers to design her buildings in her songs, where she finds a more appropriate place for her ideas. She was born in Göttingen, the city with the most Nobel Prize winners, then moved with her family to Goslar. However, she spent most of her childhood and adolescence in Ibiza, where she lived in a small house built there by her father, a professor of cultural studies.

Ava Vegas' music sounds like a convertible ride through a movie set. Perhaps the open-air ride leads through the imagined replica of Las Vegas, that city that already looks like the replica of all those longings that in life can only bounce off reality after all. But between dream and reality there exists a place, ambiguous and far, a phantasm, and this place has become music here. Thus, in the pieces of Ava Vegas, something glorious flies through the night, something luminous, visible in a glittering light reflecting in sequins, at the same time enveloped in an inescapable darkness.

Wyvern Lingo

This showcase is presented by the Embassy of Ireland, Berlin.

The three Irish friends and bandmates Karen Cowley, Caoimhe Barry and Saoirse Diane have long debunked the myth that you can't choose your family. After all, the band was formed in a youthful world of self-discovery informed by their parents' '60s/'70s classic rock and singer-songwriter music collections and the '90s/'00s R'n'B of their childhood. Her name comes from the private language of secret code words of adolescent diaries and slumber parties - the lingo (lingo) of young dragons. What began in the idyllic seaside town of Bray led them on tours throughout Europe; including gigs with Hozier and James Vincent McMorrow. In Germany, they performed at the Reeperbahn Festival and the Parcous d'Amour stage at the Maifeld Derby, among other venues.

"We are three individuals whose lives are inextricably linked. We know each other inside and out and can't lie or fake anything in front of each other, so our lyrics are full of honesty."

Tolü Makay

This showcase is presented by The Embassy of Ireland, Berlin.

Following a string of impressive singles Let Me In and Don’t Let Go that firmly announced the emergence of a rising star, Tolü unveiled her much-anticipated debut EP ‘Being’ in October 2020 via the Berlin-based label WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD.

Having used her music for many years as a medium to speak her truth, ‘Being’ hallmarks a significant chapter for Tolü. Presenting her deepest thoughts succinctly in 7 tracks, she drives home the importance of self-love, self-assurance and self-confidence, using her own experiences as a backdrop to this musical journey.

Sharktank
Sharktank

Supported by Austrian Music Export.

What started off as a solo project of rapper Mile quickly became a band in summer 2020, when young singer Katrin Paucz joined the sessions at renowned producer Marco Kleebauers studio (he famously produced several award winning and chart-topping albums from bands like Bilderbuch, Oehl and his own band, Leyya). The three band members are meeting in the studio regularly ever since - the results are songs that are created on the spot and intuitively, the honest and personal lyrics are expressions of current emotional states.

The success of their debut single Washed Up, which immediately gained traction on Spotify and radios, shows that the band hits a nerve with their signature and contemporary sound. Their 4-song EP Bad Energy lets us dive deeper into Sharktank’s colorful world. For Myself is building the bridge towards the hyper-productive trio’s upcoming debut album and again combines the best of these two worlds.

MEMES is a duo that formed in Glasgow, UK, in Spring 2019. Their debut single ‘Blah Blah Blah’ earned the band a Steve Lamacq live session on BBC 6 Music and regular radio airplay on BBC and Amazing Radio.

In 2020, MEMES released their debut EP on Fierce Panda Records; garnering airplay and words from Pitchfork, BBC Radio 1, BBC6 Music, KEXP, Amazing Radio, BBC Radio Scotland and The Skinny.

Despite the UK lockdown, the band have continued to bring their energetic live show to virtual stages worldwide, showcasing at Scotland’s Wide Days convention, SXSW in the US and Germany’s c/o pop Festival.

The songwriting duo “Gazelle & the Bear” is presenting their debut album “Weird Shaped Clouds”, a collection of songs which playfully connects pop music, modern Jazz and Hip Hop. Stories about self-love, confrontations with oneself and others and the ongoing dance between wanting and having to do something and still encountering yourself with honesty. In their creative process Ines Kolleritsch and Julian Berann created an intimate space, a warm cloud of sound which embraces the listener’s ears. “Weird Shaped Clouds” is a play between complexity and simplicity in the most gentle way.

Enda Gallery ©Lena Siripa Kauck
Enda Gallery

This showcase is presented by The Embassy of Ireland, Berlin.

For 8 years Enda Gallery has lived in Berlin, a city which is itself a character within his songs. Berlin has inspired feelings of spiritual, sexual, creative and political salvation for the Irish artist and through friends and soul mates, who now share the same journey, he has emerged in a state of pure inspiration - unshackled from expectations of the future and traumas of the past.

Enda Gallery is an artist with a real purpose, and that is to create beautiful and liberating art. He takes influence from genre defying artists such as Frank Ocean and Prince - mixed with the deep sincerity of songwriters like Sufjan Stevens, Alicia Keys and even Freddie Mercury. His fresh sense of creative deliverance provides some of the truest realisations and experiences in his songs. Beyond the purpose of Enda Gallery’s craft are his goals as an artist. To create deep, innovative and meaningful music as well as images, films and messages that connect with as many people around the world as possible. To in turn create an inspiring world.

ANNAGEMINA
ANNAGEMINA

Annagemina is presented by POP-BÜRO Region Stuttgart.

ANNAGEMINA fuse in their music confused sounds, deep basses with electronic loops and extravagant song structures to futuristic anti-pop songs. Dark atmospheric sound combinations that sometimes caress, sometimes sting.

Nested tracks that jump wonderfully anarchic between house, ambient and indie gloom. In between sparkle rapturous pop melodies that are promptly crumbled by choppy beats and deep bass pads. The music of Anna Illenberger and Michael Fiedler does not follow any common formula. It finds its spirit in the same remote wormhole through which the Dirty Projectors or Portishead have already escaped genre conventions.

The concert with ANNAGEMINA is part of the project " c/o pop 2021-musichubgermany" and is supported by the Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft GmbH with project funds of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Tuvaband

Tuvaband is part of the Faces of We are Europe 2021 .

Over the last few years Norwegian artist Tuva Hellum Marschhäuser has proven herself a master of crafting songs that capture a special atmosphere in her sound, that paint a shapeshifting world of burning emotion, music that spellbinds.

Tuvaband’s debut album "Soft Drop" saw her write songs that were airy, ghostly and effortlessly cinematic, while its follow-up "I Entered The Void" (which earned a nomination for a Norwegian Grammy) pushed her sound into rougher, heavier atmospheric rock. But what unites all her music is its raw intensity – her songs have fires inside them, and listening is like being pulled into the flame. And now with her new album "Growing Pains & Pleasures", she’s set to take her songwriting to new levels and to adventurously push the boundaries of her musical world.

Faux Real
Faux Real

Faux Real is part of the Faces of We are Europe 2021.

In the spring of 2018, Franco-American brothers Elliott and Virgile Arndt invoked the union of their inner gene genies and gave birth to Faux Real. As they conceived it, Faux Real combines elements of post-punk, glam rock, and contemporary R&B with a unique sense of humor, boy band tropes, and a forward-thinking approach to modern pop culture. Far before releasing any music, Faux Real began performing live, wooing half-confused, half-amused crowds one unconventional venue at a time. Building on a lifetime of inside jokes and shared mp3 libraries, the Arndt brothers created a signature show that simultaneously fetishizes, destroys, and re-invents their kinship through compelling choreography, playfully exploring the boundaries of duality, ridicule, and sexuality.

Top or Bottom w/ Ebow
Top or Bottom w/ Ebow

For this interview special cumming collective invited Ebow and will throw out a bunch of random topics at her to explain why those things are either overrated or underrated.

Ebow’s lyrics range between diary entries and political outcry. She is both provocative and sensitive. As a rapper she focuses on fighting against sexism, racism and homophobia. The artist who lives and works in Berlin just released her latest EP „QUEER AF II“, filled with three queer love songs, dedicated to the community.

cumming is a mainly English-speaking queer-feminist collective based in Cologne. They are building an inclusive, supportive community while promoting representation for marginalized artists, creators and organizers by creating cultural events where people who don’t speak German can find a place as well.

cumming and Ebow are a perfect match! Both work for an open, solidary and equal society and promote diversity in pop culture.

SALÒ

SALÒ is part of the Faces of We are Europe 2021.

Since summer 2019, SALÒ, who lives in Vienna, has been making music for dog pranksters, people who refuse to work and everyone else who has feelings. Despite all crises, SALÒ released his debut EP "Tränen zu Wein" in the summer of 2020 and has since been writing songs about life, suffering and probably the most beautiful mental illness in the world - love. The whole thing sounds like a wild promenade mixture of EBM, pop and dreamy electropunk. Dirty synths, honest platitudes and influences from DAF to Herbert Grönemeyer make SALÒ an ode to the flesh, the drive and heartbreak per se.

SALÒ's new single "Oxytocin" describes the cold turkey of the "cuddle hormone" and neurotransmitter oxytocin, which is released not only during birth but also during touching and sex.

Neue Deutsche Wahrheit ©Julia Gaes
Neue Deutsche Wahrheit

"No intoxication is ever enough." The duo Neue Deutsche Wahrheit oscillates between painful melancholy and intoxicating excess. In the midst of this flight from one extreme state to the next, Neue Deutsche Wahrheit invites you to a debauched feast for the eyes and ears. Pleasure becomes the credo, abundance the atitude. But beware: dance and reeling are not far apart.

The dramatically kitschy song lyrics go hand in hand with typical synth sounds of the eighties and challenge to put aside everyday cynicism and surrender to pathos. Neue Deutsche Wahrheit exaggerates decadence and immoderateness to identity and offers the audience an exquisite banquet for the senses. Pompous costumes, dazzling make-up and dramatic poses define the duo's visual oeuvre. Clubs become theater stages, the concert becomes a performance.
The time of authenticity is over.

AB Syndrom

AB Syndrom feat. Novaa und Fullax is presented by Deutschlandfunk Nova.

Support tour with Mine through Germany, Switzerland and Austria, with the joint song "Spiegelbild" at Böhmermann, concerts in Vietnam, Hong Kong and Manila - the tour life of the Berlin crypto-pop duo really picks up speed in 2019 and should actually roll with new tracks and first headliner tour through the FRG also directly further.

Sensibly then on March 27, 2020, however, not only the AB Syndromsche work "FRONTALCRASH" will be released, but also the debut "LOCKDOWN" dropped. Webcam release party and swimming with the livestream bring interpersonal context to the electronic sound. Thus the album experiences its premiere in an Ask Helmut-dringeblieben-online concert: generated in the moment, intimate yet intricate, autobiographical and in every respect without double bottoms. And quite as unbearable as first feared, the concert year doesn't turn out to be quite as unbearable as first feared: in addition to another online concert, performed together with artist and futurist Novaa, individual shows, such as at the Resonanzen Festival in Saarbrücken, can be realized in front of a real-life audience.

Malugi b2b ferrari rot
Malugi b2b ferrari rot

Malugi's idiosyncratic approach to dance music has come a long way: Risen to fame within the Cologne scene, he became a household name in his hometown over night, playing venues that he was yet to access legally. First steps as a DJ were soon followed by explorations into music production, which subsequently lead him to Berlin to pursue studies in audio design. A six months hiatus in New York finally helped him overcome his internalized pop-phobia, allowing him to rigorously experiment with a multitude of musical ideas and influences.

ferrari rot is the co-founder of Berlin’s favorite party entertainment service Dimenzione Danza, a club night for DJs, drag performers and overall freak bitches alike. Starting out just before dance floors were swept by the pandemic, she had to move to cyberspace to cut her rave teeth in the white tiled dance-cube that is HÖR, making a reputation for herself through several appearances that showcase her uncompromising, dynamic sound with an evident affinity for accelerated beats.

At c/o pop xoxo 2021 Malugi and ferrari rot will play a B2B set.

LOTA ©Johanna Besseling
LOTA

Behind the deliberately gender-neutral name LOTA hides the cologne-based singer, songwriter and producer Lotta Holtei. Her music is inspired by indie-pop influences and electronic lo-fi elements, mystical sounds and distinctive beats, contrasted by calm piano sounds and soulful lyrics. Her soft and haunting voice carries you away into a spherical sound world.

The first single "GIRL" from her upcoming debut EP is a statement in the sign of female empowerment and an appeal to the
self-image of one's own independence. It's not about romantic Hollywood happy endings on the big screen, it's about the very personal small successes you celebrate when you realize that you are enough for yourself.

Vaovao
Vaovao

Vaovao is presented by the Institute for Pop Music at Folkwang University of the Arts.

Vaovao - Six letters of a journey through synthesizer sounds and sound collages, supported by fragmentary violins, driving beats and a hypothermic singing that hardly allows for emotions. Vaovao's music draws on a wide variety of elements from the recent history of pop music, reflecting or quoting them, but always remaining more than a purely retro phenomenon due to new combinations. The lines of the German lyrics are sometimes dadaistic, they are fragments of narratives and movements, literary oscillations and vibrations that challenge. Sound and text move in musical and lyrical spectrums, rather than in delineated patterns. The music swims freely instead of delineating itself. And at the same time, it doesn't hollow itself out; it remains dense and engaging. This is not a journey on the way to a destination. The destination is the journey. A journey that is just beginning.

EABS

EABS is part of the Faces of We are Europe 2021.

The past decade has been marked as a major refreshment of the jazz scene around the world, including key cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and London. This new generation of musicians made a real renaissance of the genre, once again taking it from the underground to the mainstream, attracting completely new audiences. The same mission is guided by the musicians of Wrocław based band EABS. They have been working on the concept of "reconstruction from deconstruction" since 2012, often redefining the classics from several decades ago, mixing them with the latest genres of contemporary urban music, creating a completely new quality and original sound. It is possible that many will claim that this is no longer jazz, but sometimes you have to demolish and rebuild to create something completely new - based on the old foundations.

Cmern & Opsay
Cmern & Opsay

Cmern & Opsay are presented by the Institute for Pop Music of the Folkwang University of the Arts.

This is not future music - at most a musical parallel society. Wow, a word with five "L"s! Awesome.
About the music: The well-known poet Fred Schlakks sums it up best here when he describes the duo as "Dortmund's post-rap bohemians." A penchant for mindless sweeping rhymes that at times seem Schlageresque suggests a past (and future?) in the pubs of the Ruhr. And guess right! They have the best times behind them - and nothing more to lose.

LIENNE embodies an unrestrained love for life. A love that is completely palpable in her sensual music. She fiercely relays songs that are both rough and at times profound, with themes that range from life's more mundane struggles to the most challenging topics of our current society. This exceptional singer not only shares the trials and tribulations that young women are often faced with in today's world, but also the singular battles of managing your native culture in the western world. With effortless charm, depth of emotion, and diverse source material, the young Augburgians LIENNE simply captivates her listeners, in a way often only seen among the world's most beloved vocalists.

MOLA ©Christin Büttner
MOLA

The Bavarian Export Session with Mola is presented by VPBy.

The singer MOLA draws in her music the unadorned antithesis to a rosy world. She parties herself to death, drags you into her chaotic everyday life and renounces in her songs the usual romanticizing transfiguration of the merciless disorientation that catches up with you after the last cigarette on the way home. It is a musical and lyrical counter-design to the mere functionality that has become ubiquitous in recent years. Anti instead of bubble pop.

The classic hero is a perfect man: invulnerable, untouchable but above all unapproachable. MOLA presents in "Antiheld" the opposite to all these attributes. She turns her inner self inside out and addresses what hurts her - undistorted, not exaggerated, approachable. But if you think that this theme world has to be presented in a sentimental and passive attitude, you are wrong. MOLA describes her own low blows with defiant self-confidence. "Antiheld" is lived authenticity in fucking awesome aesthetics. Fuck heroes.

Telquist

The concert is presented by Deutschlandfunk Nova.

Sebastian Eggerbauer, better known as Telquist, is one of the most exciting rising indie artists Germany has to offer. With his songs like Mojo or Trash Talk, he has already been able to play his way into the top rankings of the German university radio charts. In them, Telquist sings his usual laid-back, but with ambition to speed of self-expression, demarcation, coolness and the flight to the front. His musical socialization is broad. In his youth he played bass in indie, reggae and ska-punk bands. So it's not surprising that his songs move somewhere between doubtful dejection and pure euphoria.

Somewhere between hip hop and jazz. Ferdinand Schwarz, Darius Heid, Lukas Wilmsmeyer and Leon Raum build beats, shape songs, create spheres of sound and pushing grooves - all live on stage and completely connected to the moment. The band's extreme spontaneity creates an extraordinary and powerful connection with audience, space and vibe. GiiRL ©Rieke de Vrieß
GiiRL

GiiRL - the duo consisting of Milan Hofmann and Dennis Hölscher - have already played their way through some renowned Cologne clubs in 2017 with their first EP "Drowning". Nothing is missing for the two-man band: the virtuoso guitar playing of Milan and the drumming skills of Dennis provide a unique sound, where both the highest and lowest notes come from the complex sounds of Milan's guitar. Only a bass synthesizer supports the two on stage.

Their talent was practically laid in the cradle of the two. Milan, son of the legendary Cologne music producer Wolfgang Stach, started playing the violin and guitar at a very early age. He also began studying guitar at the Cologne Music Academy at the age of 16. Dennis has also been playing the drums since he was 9 years old. "Dennis' incredible musical sensitivity and energy are an extreme incentive and catalyst for me in this," says Milan. "We complement and inspire each other in a unique way. We don't need clear procedures, one look is enough and we know where we're going."
