The c/o pop festival has been bringing national and international acts from the fields of electro, indie, hip-hop/rap and related styles to Cologne's stages since 2004 - including both established artists and newcomers. Since then, the focus has increasingly shifted towards national newcomers - after all, c/o pop sees itself as a festival of discovery.
Highlights include special events such as the pop-NRW Award, where the best acts from NRW are chosen, label evenings, showcases and networking events, where labels, musicians and other players can get to know each other.
The past few years have shown that the concept works: a number of national acts such as The Whitest Boy Alive, BrandtBrauerFrick, Moderat, Roosevelt, Dillon and AnnenMayKantereit played at the festival long before their breakthrough, proving that the c/o pop festival is an ideal springboard - also for international success. In 2019, the organizers have revamped the entire c/o pop concept and, what's more, made a double move: For the first time, the festival took place at the beginning of the season and thus in May and moved from the Belgian Quarter to the colorful Ehrenfeld.
Through the Corona Pandemic, the concept was transferred to the vituelle world to offer newcomers a stage despite the festival cancellation in April 2020.
Then, in October 2020, "c/o pop xoxo" was born.
c/o pop xoxo is a special digital edition that the c/o pop festival and c/o pop convention team developed in the pandemic year 2020 so that Cologne could have, if not a real festival, at least a virtual one. As part of the special edition, the c/o pop festival and the associated convention were bundled into four days and two different chanels. While the festival stream could simply be tuned in, there were specific slots for some limited-participant convention workshops that interested parties could sign up for in advance.
The festival consisted of a carefully selected mix of concert highlights and pre-recorded special content that allowed viewers to see a different side of their favorite acts. For example, the festival team invited the musicians* to a candy factory, to vaulting or to the go-kart track. For the streamed concerts, the festival organizers placed great emphasis on the design of the stages, giving the shows very individual and very special moments.

Funding Projects National and international promotion of young newcomers
This year, c/o pop Festival is a cooperation partner of three sponsored projects:
music hub germany
The funding project "music hub germany" has already been taking place for three years as part of the c/o pop Festival. This project, initiated by the festival organisers and supported by the federal government, focuses on the targeted promotion of local, regional and national up-and-coming artists. This has always been an important pillar for the festival organisers. Thanks to the music hub germany project, the promotion of young artists can be further expanded this year: Around 80% of the bands booked for the c/o pop Festival now come from Germany - in 2019, for example, around 60 young German bands will be able to present themselves to an international audience free of charge during c/o Ehrenfeld. With the music hub germany, the makers of the c/o pop festival initiate and establish an exchange with other festival makers as well as with agencies, labels and media from over 25 countries. The project has been supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media an Initiative Musik.
The past few years have shown that the concept works: a number of national acts such as The Whitest Boy Alive, BrandtBrauerFrick, Moderat, Roosevelt, Dillon and AnnenMayKantereit played long before their breakthrough as part of the festival and prove that the c/o pop Festival is an ideal start - also for international success.
Wunderkinder - German Music Talent
The project "Wunderkinder - German Music Talent" took place for the first time in Cologne in 2019 as part of c/o Ehrenfeld. It was initiated in 2013 by the makers of the Reeperbahn Festival. The aim of the support programme is to present the music industry with particularly promising talents from the home country who have a good chance of an international career. With the Cologne edition of "Wunderkinder - German Music Talent", we want to establish a springboard to Hamburg that complements the activities and programmes to promote young German acts within the framework of the c/o pop Festival perfectly," says Norbert Oberhaus, Managing Director of cologne on pop GmbH. The following ten musical acts from the "Wunderkinder" programme performed at this year's c/o pop Festival: Kelvyn Colt, Gianni Mae, Serious Klein, BLVTH, Amilli, Sofia Portanet, NOVAA, Luke Noa, ELI and Moli.
Two of these "Wunderkinder" will then have the chance to play at Reeperbahn Festival and participate in an international project that will take the artists to Nashville, Beijing and New York this year. "Since it was founded in 2013, 60 national artists* and around 150 international talent buyers have taken part in our "Wunderkinder - German Music Talent" programme. Since then, many of the participating musicians* have also established themselves in markets outside Germany. I am delighted that we have been given the opportunity to expand the programme thanks to the extended support of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Thanks to the cooperation with our friends at c/o pop Festival, we can now support even more talents from Germany in their international market entry," says Alexander Schulz, Director of the Reeperbahn Festival.
We Are Europe
The "We Are Europe" project is a unique, innovative industry and artist exchange with the aim of promoting culture and music. In 2015, eight festivals from all over Europe joined forces for the project in order to bundle synergies and to bring artists, personalities and speakers together and make them better known beyond their own national borders. Artists from the fields of music, digital and contemporary culture can present themselves at the various festivals and enter into dialogue with one another.
In this way, the festival organizers want to set impulses in the fields of culture and politics. One of these partners is the c/o pop Festival. Hauschka and Lena Willikens, for example, perform from the programme during the festival, and discussions and workshops will also take place during the c/o pop Convention within the framework of the participating festivals. In addition to the c/o pop Festival, the following festivals are also involved in the project: Elevate (Graz), Sónar (Barcelona), Reworks (Thessaloniki), Unsound (Krakow), Nuits Sonores (Lyon), Insomnia (Tromsø) and TodaysArt (The Hague).
